Just about everybody who’s ever thought they’d had an ounce of musical talent within has thought about starting up a band at one time or another. If your dream is to become the next big thing in the music business, know that you can start a band and not spend much money doing it. All it’s going to take is a little patience and a whole lot of practice, but not a lot of money, in the end.
When it comes to getting up and going, it goes without saying that people who actually know what they’re doing with their instruments is paramount. If the goal is to just get together and play in a garage, it’s really not all that important but if the goal is something more than it’s going to be important to start thinking like a professional musician in many ways.
This means, first of all, that one is going to have to find musical gear that will make it easy to play quality music. For sure, something like a very cheap guitar is going to sound exactly like what it is, no matter the PA system or amplifier it’s run through. If saving a bit of money is still important but so is quality, then one can’t go wrong with something like an Epiphone electric guitar, for instance.
One can cruise the garage sales for an electric guitar for sale or go online and check out a number of auction sites or even classified ads for that elusive yet extremely affordable axe that the lead guitar player is going to want to call his own on the bands march to eventual superstardom, or at least its first paying gig down at the local bowling alley.
And when it comes to finding almost any kind of musical instrument or band support gear, never forget that a pawn shop usually has a wide variety of such items at a nicely discounted price. Many musicians have secured their first set of drums or even a Yamaha acoustic electric guitar from a pawnshop, and this tradition is extremely old in the music business, so don’t worry about the so-called stigma of buying from one of those places.
All of the above should be looked at with a clear eye, because it’s important to line up a few things if one hopes to get a band going but not spend a lot of money doing so. For one, no band will be good if the players in it aren’t willing to practice to be good. Also, there has to be some money spent on the right gear, so keep hitting the Internet or those pawn shops.
Keep in mind that no matter what kind of gear has been found — and it may be some of the best professional equipment in the world — it’s not going to really matter that much if you don’t know how to play at and put it together in a great sounding fashion. Getting up and going without spending a lot of money is possible, but getting it sounding good may take a bit more effort.
